Jane’s story

Discover how inspirational retired Paralympian, Jane, thrived and reignited her passions with us during a week-long stay...

In the summer of 2022, Jane, who has cerebral palsy and learning difficulties, enjoyed a week-long stay with us at Calvert Exmoor after hearing about our accessible activity centre through her parents.

A retired Paralympic swimmer and equestrian, Jane has competed in six Paralympics and won 5 gold medals during her career representing Great Britain, so she is no stranger to taking on exciting activities and making the most of her abilities!

At the end of her stay, she kindly took the time to share a little bit about herself and what she loved most about her visit to Calvert Exmoor…

Jane said…

"I have cerebral palsy, which affects all my limbs, and learning difficulties, so I wanted to come to Calvert Trust Exmoor so I could just be myself and try new experiences before getting older.

I am 56 years old and it was my parents who first told me about Calvert Exmoor and all the activities I could enjoy here. At the start of my stay, they dropped me off before I started my week of activities.

During my stay, I’ve done rock climbing, abseiling, canoeing, archery and horse riding. With the horse riding, it was a bit scary to get back on as I haven’t done it in quite a long time but I was okay once I was on.

I think my favourite activity that I took part in this week was the Crate Stack; I managed to reach 16 crates high and took part with a group and we were determined to get to the top!"

"Although I have enjoyed all the activities here, I have also liked chatting with other families with disabilities as I like the interaction and I don’t have this much at home, although I do work on a farm two days a week with others who have disabilities.

After having such a good time during my break, I would like to come back to Calvert Exmoor with other people or as part of a group to spread inspiration about this place and let others know how great it is.

I want to get more people involved and help to spread awareness of Calvert Exmoor as I don’t think lots of people realise that places like this are available for people like me!”
